Under EU legislation, vehicles from the European Union are permitted to be in the UK for a continuous period of six months before registering with the DVLA for tax purposes. In addition, Visitors coming to the UK that don’t intend living here can usually use a vehicle displaying foreign (non-UK) number plates for up to six months in a 12 month period. This can be one single or several shorter visits, adding up to a six month period. During this time the vehicle can travel displaying the non-UK plates but only provided the vehicle is still fully registered and tax paid in the country it came from (the driver’s home country). The owner must apply to the DVLA to register his/her vehicle for registration & taxation purposes within 14 days if they become a resident or if their stay is longer than 6 months. Members of the public can report all foreign registered vehicles directly to the DVLA at: Workflow Team, D12, DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AH but MUST include the Make, model, vehicle registration and location. In the meantime the area will be monitored but further enforcement cannot be considered at this point in time. Further info can be obtained from:- www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/temporary-imports.
