Could the grass be left to grow long next year?

I have been wondering if this area of grass could next year be left to grow long. There are obviously many benefits from leaving the grass to grow during the spring and summer and this area is never used for any sport. If it were left to grow long with ‘paths’ or ‘areas’ mowed through and in it wildlife would be encouraged, people would be more inclined to use it as an area for picnics etc. I don’t understand the complexities of grass management but have seen this approach taken in other areas and feel it could be a really cost effective way of enriching the environment of Mottingham.
