Dangerous crossing

Reported via desktop in the Pavement Defect category anonymously at 14:09, Thu 17 October 2024

Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6627630.

This week, for the SECOND time my son nearly lost his life at this crossing. As he was crossing the zebra crossing having had both cars in both directions stop for him and his friends. A 4x4 truck who did not see the crossing over took the stationary cars and was an inch from hitting the boys. The boys were so shaken. I asked them to report it to school.

The crossing is poorly marked out and poorly lit!!

The road is long and straight. An invitation fro drivers to put their foot down once they have left the congestion of Orpington Station and the High Street.

Bromley council are awful at making "routes to school" safe for children. How on earth do you promote use of public transport and walking to school if you do not make school routes safe!

Until Bromley invest in safer routes/roads for children to get to school, I shall be driving my son in to school..

  • This report has been referred to our Traffic Management Team who are responsible for the way traffic is managed on Bromley's roads; including, but not limited to, implementing new road markings and signage in relation to road safety and parking; walking and cycling improvements, including identifying locations for new cycle racks and installing Vehicle Activated speed signs - however, please note that responsibility for enforcing speed limits rests with the Police.

Where requests are made for changes, our Traffic Management Team will consider all requests but often there is a need for a full investigation, planning and consultation within the local area particularly around proposed new traffic schemes, and any considerations must be balanced with borough-wide priorities. This report is now closed on FixMyStreet and our Traffic Management Team will consider this matter.

  • Where are we with investigating this dangerous crossing please?

Posted anonymously at 11:11, Sat 9 November 2024

  • The crossing has all of the required lighting, road markings and signage in place. Unfortunately, poor or sub-standard driving occurs and can not be accounted for.

  • The lighting for the zebra is obscure by an overgrown tree which hides one of the flashing yellow lights (left) when driving towards Orpington High Street.

  • This is a school crossing and requires better lighting!! The yellow sphere light has faded. What will it take to draw your attention to this crossing. A death of a child?!? This has been raised on numerous occasions. If this was Beckenham. This worked would have been completed by now. Orpington needs more and better investment.

  • The Highways team have been asked to look at the faded lights to establish whether replacements are required, and the tree team have been asked to investigate the tree blocking view of the light on the approach to the High Street.

  • Any update? The lights to illuminate waiting pedestrians also do not work! I shall be referring to this correspondence when a young life is lost on this dangerous crossing.
