Concrete (cemented hardcore) sticking up from footpath.
Reported via mobile in the Pavement Defect category anonymously at 23:24, Saturday 12 April 2025
Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7426650.
On 29th March, I got off the 358 bus from Farnborough village, opposite Orpington bus garage, in the dark.
The footpath towards Green Street Green High St is not metalled, but basically the earthen edge of the adjacent parkland and was very dimly lit. Heading towards the High Street, I saw the man ahead of me stumble, though he didn't fall. I thought nothing of it, but a few seconds later, my foot hit a hard object, protruding from the path and I fell hard onto the road, without time to break my fall. Very luckily, there was no moving traffic, but as I hit the road, I felt a sharp pain in the right of my chest. The man who was ahead of me came back and helped me up. I thanked him and said "you hit that too, didn't you?" He said yes.
This was on the Saturday and I hoped the pain would pass, but it didn't. By the Monday, I was in so much pain that I left work and went to A&E at the PRUH. When I was examined by a doctor, he concluded that I had ruptured one or more intercostal muscles and may have fractured a rib.
The injury was significantly debilitating and very painful. I am still in pain.
I returned to Green Street Green, a week later, to take the attached pictures in daylight and was amazed to see that what I'd assumed was something organic, like a tree root, was in fact a large man-made object.
It is unacceptable that 1. The path from such a busy bus stop towards the High St, rather than being in any way paved, becomes earth (and exposed hardcore) and is so poorly lit 2. That there is a very significant industrially-made trip hazard protruding from the path. 3. That the obstacle has not been identified an dealt with. It was, and remains, an accident waiting to happen and, unfortunately it happened to me.
