Issue with unpruned tree

Reported via desktop in the Tree Requires Pruning category anonymously at 13:39, Wednesday 7 May 2025

Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7534679.

The tree outside 41 Lime Tree Walk has not been pruned in a very long time and is so bad now it touches the roofs of the cars. It is probably the largest tree in the road and has been neglected, the pavement has twice been dug up due to root damage and now it's the neglected pruning that is the issue. The tree really needs replacing with a new tree as the pavement will continually need digging up going forward. However I guess replacing it will not happen, if this is the case please can it be pruned right back asap.

  • Bromley will only undertake works to a tree for an identified health & safety or highway obstruction issue. Please note that as outlined in our Tree Management Strategy Trees – London Borough of Bromley

Bromley Council will not prune or remove trees in relation to the following: • Branches overhanging property boundaries or buildings • Lack of direct or indirect sunlight • Where a tree is thought be too tall, wide, large, or old • Branches and/or limbs in physical contact with telephone wires or power wires • Interference with solar panels or satellite, TV, or other media reception • Leaf fall • Fruit fall • Problems associated with pollen • Excreta, mess, sap or staining caused by insects or birds • Obstruction of the view from house windows, gardens, balconies etc • Shedding of small twigs. Nor will we remove leaf and branch debris at the base of a tree which serves to protect roots and protects the tree from lawn mowers, strimmers and dogs

The situation will be reviewed cyclically as part of our programme of tree condition surveys and safety inspections.

  • PLEASE NOTE : As with Every Year for this road, We confirm that these lime trees are on the contractor's list of needed yearly works for basal and epicormic growth cutback.

Our contractors are currently removing such regrowth on trees across the Borough as part of their yearly summer program. We cannot give a specific date when they will attend this road. Tree Friends help our tree team by cutting back and bagging foliage into purple sacks for our street cleansing crews to collect. Please see full details and consider joining LBB Tree Friends. • We kindly ask that new and separate occurrences of issues are reported as new cases with unique reference numbers to avoid conflicting information or updates, especially if at separate locations. This helps us ensure smoother communication between all and helps us ensure that the correct information is given to our teams and contractors. Please Note that with regards to the Footways. We regularly renew footway surfaces to accommodate tree roots as Trees are also considered important public highway and amenity assets. Please log issues regarding weeds, shrubs, footway surfaces, handrails, fencing, streetlamps, potholes etc. via https://fix.bromley.gov.uk as a new report using the map marker and provide full location, details, and photos. Thank you.

  • Can you send someone out to look at this tree because to say it doesn't need pruning is rediculous! There are a number of telephone wires going through it and the lower branches are so low they touch the roof of cars and also anyone walking beneath.

  • As per the LBB Tree Management Strategy, we do not prune trees interfering with utility cables or phone lines. Our policy is based on the 1984 Telecommunications Act whereby service providers are obligated to maintain their network in good working condition using the monthly fees customers pay. In the case of phone cables, please contact OpenReach. In the case of power cables, contact UKPN.

These companies are responsible for the repair and upkeep of their cable network including pruning back of street trees. They have specialist utility arboriculture teams to work near these lines which may involve the temporary disconnection of services.

The LBB tree surgeon contractors do not clear branches or vegetation or work around any type of overhead cables.

  • Please note: as per our above update, all trees on Lime Tree Walk are on a yearly schedule to have the lower "epicormic growth" removed to a height of about 5 m for clearance over the footway and road. We do not have a specific date when this work will be done. But it is done every year on this road.

  • You also state above that the tree has been inspected and does not require pruning! It can't have been inspected because nobody in their right mind would say that it doesn't need pruning. Please send someone out and they will see.

  • The responsible London Borough of Bromley Tree Officer has now visited the site and met with the customer to fully explain different aspects of the LBB Tree Management Strategy as well as the FMS reporting which includes automatic updates. She also cut low epicormic branch tips to allow better movement across the driveway and footway. This road will be visited by our tree surgeons this June /July or August to remove the lower epicormic growth as per our yearly maintenance schedule. We cannot give a more precise time frame than that. Thank you.
