Explosion of ring neck parakeets

Reported via mobile in the Request for Park Infrastructure category anonymously at 08:36, Wed 25 June 2025

Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7759712.

Local population of ring neck parakeets has exploded in last year, to the point where they are causing a significant amount of noise throught the entire day.

Has council considered any mitigations to control the local population which seem to live in the recreational ground- such as traps or shooting?

I am concerned the population will continue to grow, causing harming the local bird life through increased competition and increased noise pollution.

I have noticed a population since living in penge - just over 1 year. But in the last 6 months have noticed a signicant increase in numbers and associated noise

  • We are sorry to hear that you are troubled by the noise from the ring-neck parakeets within Penge Recreation Ground. There is currently no guidance issued on a wide-spread cull to control of non-native parakeets within public land. While private landowners are able to use control measures such as trapping and shooting, whereby there is reasonable evidence that there is economical damage. Current data reveals no sufficient evidence to suggest that ring-necked parakeet is causing a significant adverse impact on wild bird populations, therefore this is not something that the Council is currently considering as part of its Biodiversity Action Plan.
