Dangerous Pavement

Reported via desktop in the Pavement Defect category anonymously at 17:26, Sunday 15 February 2026

Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8925364.

Yesterday I had a nasty fall on the pavement adjacent to the Toby Carvery car park on Monks Way, Eden Park, Beckenham.

We have lived in Eden Way for about 38 years and as long as we have lived in the area the pavement on this side of Monks Way has been a trip hazard. The main reason for this is that this pavement is covered in tarmac rather than paving stones. Ad hoc repairs have been done over the years resulting in a hazardous patchwork of tarmac of differing age, textures and of differing levels and gradients. Where I tripped yesterday there are two hazards nearby to one another and due to being in shock after the fall, I am uncertain which caused me to fall. One is a depressed area in the pavement that presents the hazard of potentially tripping over the rim of the depression; the other is a patch repair which is higher than the surrounding area thus presenting a trip hazard similar to a low speed hump on the road. Photographs of both these areas are attached. Also attached is a photograph of the injury I sustained as a result of this hazardous pavement.

I am 77 in a month’s time so a fall such as this could have had life-changing consequences. It is lucky my hands/arms protected my face, but I had to have treatment at the Beckenham Beacon where they excised grit from the palms of my hands and treated a nasty cut.

My neighbour, who is also in his 70s, is vision impaired and he too finds this area hazardous as do many of our neighbours in Eden Way. It is worth pointing out that whilst there are no actual addresses along Monks Way, it has a high footfall as residents of Eden Way need to use Monks Way in order to access the facilities in Upper Elmers End Road including bus and rail services.
